Think red. For a lot of us, the
image evokes thoughts of
passion, life, and even a little
Communism (Okay, scratch
that last one.-MAX]. Red
screams,"Look at me!" or even "Watch
out." Red signifies love, blood, and
misspelled words (Remember your red-
pen wielding high school English
teacher?-MAC. But for Anthony
Gelinas of Greedspeed in Thousand Oaks,
California,red stands for romance, thrill-
seeking,and attention-getting-in the
form of his 2000 VW GTI, that is.
As with all die-hard global tuning enthusiasts,
a car isn't an MRyde until its fullest potential is
exploited. This means little underhood
components will remain stock, mobiletronics will
be rockin', and exteriors better be making heads
turn homeboys and beautiful babes alike.
Thankfully, Anthony knew what he wanted (And
what he was doing.-MAX]. In a little over a
month, what was once a bone-stock Golf has
transformed into a code red masterpiece.
Previously a '99 Jetta, a '99 A4 Avant, and a
'98 Passat owner, SeÑor Gelinas knew a thing or
two about making changes and the people who
were up far the job. Anthony's crew at
Greedspeed began the engine configurations.
When the GTI came out, it sported a 1.8L turbo
engine with a compression ratio of 9.5, a
Neuspeed P-Flow air intake, a Remus exhaust
from CEC, Beru Ultra X spark plugs, and Forced
Performance intercooler and pipes. A Neuspeed
Variable Boost Level race chip was also installed
to up the power ante just a tad.
Little was done to the driveline, with the
exception of a Neuspeed short shift kit,
reducing the throw 40 percent. On
the other hand, much was done to the chassis
by way of suspension mods,
including Neuspeed front and rear sport
springs/coilovers and Bilstein front and rear
sport shocks. A host of other Neuspeed goods
include a 25mm front anti-roll bar, a 28mm rear
anti-roll bar, a front strut brace, and a lower
control arm tie-bar. Both the front and rear were
lowered 1'/z inches as well, in order to
accommodate the speed bumps and road
ditches that all lowered cars adore.
CEC provided the Oettlnger 18X8inch wheels,
which roll on Nitto NT 555 225/40-18 rubber. And
just in case his MRyde has trouble spotting road
obstacles, Anthony can at least slam on the
Audi TT slotted front brakes in hopes of slowing
down enough to clear the bumps without
scratching the bottom. EBC Green Stuff brake
pads and brake lines were also added.
In terms of turning heads, CEC had the
goods again. An Oettinger body kit was the way
to go, along with an Oettinger rear wing. But the
most unique mod was the Jetta front-end
conversion, which was completed by North
Ranch Body Craft, also located in Thousand
Oaks. Keeping the streets lighted at night are
Hello E-Codes with a Gourmet Garage Xenon
conversion. Obviously, Kevin's color of choice
was red for this ravishing beauty, and as a
bonus he had Cool Tint splash some graphics
onto the Golf's hood and doors.
A peek through the windows and into the car's
interior reveals VDO gauges, and a shift knob
and pedals by Oettinger. A Torasport carbon
fiber dash kit was installed to cool off this hot
number's otherwise fiery nature. Without a
doubt, no MRyde is complete without some hip
grindin' music blasting from all speakers.
Thanks to Audio Experts Car Stereo and
Security in Ventura, California, an Alpine head
unit and amplifiers, JL Audio 6.5-inch two-way
speakers, and Scosche wiring (Mad props go out
to the wiring.MAX) were installed. We're not
surprised Anthony has a stealthbox with JL
Audio 10-inch voice coil subwoofers that are in a
slot-loaded sealed enclosure, either.
All in all, you have to see this MRyde to fully
appreciate the detailing and work that was
performed on this Jolf (Or is it a Getta?-MAXJ.
And while its split personality-looks catch people
off-guard in an admiring sort of way, we know
that this hybrid is definitely worthy of its own siren song.
